Mt 4.12
Now when Jesus heard that John [the Baptist, Jesus’ cousin] had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee.
v.17 From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
1. Fishers of Men – call to Andrew and Simon, sons of Jonah
Mt 4.18-22 Mk 1.16-20, Lk 5.1-11
Mt 4.19 And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
2. Delivered on Sabbath
Mk1.21-28, Lk 4.31-37
Mk 1.22-26 And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes. And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, Saying, “Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.”
And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Hold thy peace, and come out of him.”
And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.
3. Peter’s Mother in law healed
Mt 8.14-17, Mk 1.29-34 Lk 9.38-41
Mt 8.14-16 And when Jesus was come into Peter’s house, he saw his wife’s mother laid, and sick of a fever. And he touched her hand, and the fever left her: and she arose, and ministered unto them. When the even was come, they brought unto him many that were possessed with devils: and he cast out the spirits with his word, and healed all that were sick.
•Laid hands on the sick and she recovered; touched her hand and the fever left.
•God healed them all who were sick.
4. Call to disciples – James and John the Beloved, sons of Zebedee
Mt 4.18-22, Mk 16-20, Lk 5.1-11
Mt 4.21-22 And going on from thence, he saw other two brethren, James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, in a ship with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and he called them. And, they immediately left the ship and their father, and followed him.
•Andrew and John had been disciples of John the Baptist.
John 1.35-41 Again the next day after John stood, and two of his disciples; And looking upon Jesus as he walked, he saith, Behold the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, and they followed Jesus.
Then Jesus turned, and saw them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? They said unto him, Rabbi, (which is to say, being interpreted, Master,) where dwellest thou? He saith unto them, Come and see. They came and saw where he dwelt, and abode with him that day: for it was about the tenth hour.
One of the two which heard John speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter’s brother. He first findeth his own brother Simon, and saith unto him, We have found the Messias, which is, being interpreted, the Christ.
5. Call to disciple – Matthew, the tax collector
Mt 9.9-13, Mk 2.13-17, Lk 5.27-32
Mt 9.9 And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he arose, and followed him.
•Jesus came to those who are lost.
Mt 9.11-13 And when the Pharisees saw it, they said unto his disciples, Why eateth your Master with publicans and sinners?
But when Jesus heard that, he said unto them, “They that be whole need not a physician, but they that are sick. But go ye and learn what that meaneth, I will have mercy, and not sacrifice: for I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.”
Jesus came to proclaim the Kingdom of God is now. He said “at hand”.
Jesus did not come to call the righteous, those obeying and fulfilling the Law of Moses.
Jesus came to call those who were sinners – outside of the Law, those who were separate from God.
