Without realizing it, time can pass while you are busy doing “things”. It has been a year since I posted in this blog. I have been busy writing elsewhere.
In the past year I have become more active with administration in ministry and traveled. I have written more from a sermon and edit standpoint; rather than a creative or commentary standpoint. Also, I have noticed that the more I comment on social media the less I write here. Suffice it to say I have been busy in both of those areas. Let’s add to that building an audio-visual platform for my church and building a Bible college. There is a lot of research in both that is required before you can do much; then there is the ongoing maintenance and learning on top of that.
It is probably a good thing that I have been opinion-quiet over the last year. There are many who would get offended then label me as one of “them” and no longer hear me.
I have been rethinking things. It’s a first of the year kind of thing. What should I really spend my time doing? Big question.
It reminds me of high school, in a way. In the 1970s it seemed that battery testing was vogue. In this case the California testing of high school students to see where their skills and interests would likely direct them. I scored in area 99. Area 99 noted no specific area. Hmmph. It was similar when I took the ASVAB – a military “skills” test to determine what military specialty would best fit your interests and skills. Yeah, it said I could do anything. Hmmph. They were not very helpful to me. So, I did whatever seemed good at the time. Not life directing but it was something to fill the time: bartender, waiter, cook, Navy electronics, fire safety, security, karate martial arts, kick boxing, acting, stand up comedy… little metal ball in a pinball game getting bounced around by whatever it touched.
That is life without real goals. There are a lot of things you can do. You do not have to do them all. It makes for an adventure, but it does not necessarily make for a successful life.
So, looking at all that is available for me to do now, somethings will have to be a “yes” and somethings will have to be a “no”. That is the choice of goal setting. What you will do versus what you will not do.
What I have decided to do is walk with the God of the Bible like one of those biblical characters: have a real, conversational relationship with the Creator of It All. That is my chief adventure. Now, where that additionally leads me is helping where and how I can with my church and our international fellowship of churches. My penchant for administration, organization, and writing have proven to be useful and beneficial there. It’s the other things to do that I question priority.
And, therein lies my dilemma.
Assess all. Narrow it down. Reduce options. Act.
Do those things that will mean the most to you…
I will let you know how that goes.
